Proverbs 8:22,23

"The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.".

Today we read a proverb that teaches about the divine providence of our LORD. Spiritual wisdom must yield to the notion that God has predestined and molded each individual life according to His good will and pleasure; we are the clay and our LORD is the potter. Those who by grace have come to trust in the LORD in truth are assured of the LORD's care over all His works. We read in Psalm 104:

"O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches. So is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts. There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein. These wait all upon thee; that thou mayest give them their meat in due season." (Psalm 104:24-27).

The words "set up" in the KJV or "established" in the NAS literally mean "consecrated". This is pointing to the fact that an individual becomes a heir of salvation before the beginning of the earth. Many of the mysteries of providence are sealed to human understanding. We do learn from this proverb that the LORD possessed His people at the beginning of His way and likewise by wisdom founded the earth:

"LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens. By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew." (Proverbs 3:19,20).
