Today we look at a proverb that points to the divine providence of God made manifest in His children. When an individual becomes saved by the grace of God this fact will be evidenced by a continual, ongoing desire in doing God's will. One of the greatest attributes of a true child of God is the compassion and mercy that they show in their lives; this points to the fact that we are made in the image of God who is merciful and just. Jesus declared:
"Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy." (Matthew 5:7).
"Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful." (Luke 6:36).
On the other hand, those who continually show cruelty to others are evidencing the fact that they are not children of God but rather children of evil. A cruel person "troubles their own flesh" in that by their actions, they are setting themselves up for destruction. Because God is just, He will not allow cruelty to go unpunished. By contrast, a true child of God will show goodness and good works in their life which God has instilled in them from the foundation of the world:
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." (Ephesians 2;10).
