Today we look at a proverb that compares the fate of the upright with that of the wicked. The lips or lips of the truthful is a spiritual picture of those who have become saved; as believers witness the gospel to others, their lips are bringing truth which is the very nature of the written Word and Christ. While here on earth, believers are comissioned to bring the truths of the gospel to the unsaved world and this is to continue until our death when we will be established with the LORD in eternity forever more. In Revelation 19 we read of the coming of Christ and the ultimate victory of truth:
"I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS." (Revelation 19:11-16).
The second part of our proverb tells us that the lying tongue in only for a moment. A lying tongue is a spiritual picture of those who come with false gospels; they do not bring the truth or at least the whole truth of the gospel, therefore their language is not truthful and unacceptable to a true child of God. False gospels exist, but neither truth nor salvation established by falsehood. False gospels may be appealing, but they do not offer the eternal rewards of truly being saved; we read similar instruction in Psalm 52 which speaks of the futility of boastful wickedness:
"Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually. Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah. Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue. God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah. The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him: Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness. But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever. I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done it: and I will wait on thy name; for it is good before thy saints." (Psalm 52).
