Proverbs 13:12

"Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.".

Today we again read a proverb that is pointing to salvation. The hope deffered that maketh a heart sick is pointing to the unsaved as they quietly wait upon our LORD. Because salvation is not of works but rather the free grace or unmerited favor of the LORD. Trust in God is a gift from above, it does not come from a reprobate mind; therefore true, fearless trust in Him can only be instilled by Him, therefore all must wait upon the LORD to see if He will abundantly pardon and be merciful:

"Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies. Deliver me not over unto the will of mine enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty. I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD." (Psalm 27:11-14).

The second part of the proverb points to the grace of God in salvation. What is the desire and hope that is a tree of life? It is salvation; the word life indicating spiritual life. This fact is further confirmed in the Bible where we read that the future "tree of life" is located in heaven:

"And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city." (Revelation 22:12-14).
