Quiet Earth Fellowservants of Christ

Proverbs 13:20

"He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.".

Here we read a proverb that pertains to fellowship with other Christians. A wise man is a spiritual picture of a saved individual. The Holy Spirit works through God's Word, the Bible in redemption and sanctification of the sinner. This is why Christians are spiritually wise; they extract their wisdom from the Bible:

"all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works." (2 Timothy 3:12-17).

The second part of our parable tells us that those who are companions of fools will be destroyed. In the Bible, a fool is a spiritual picture of an unsaved person; they do not have the imputed grace of Christ necessary to discern spiritual things in truth. So in short, the proverb is teaching us to stay close to the Word of God and other Christians to further embrace spiritual wisdom. On the other hand, the wicked are companions of the world and void of spiritual wisdom:

"See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Ephesians 5:15-20).
