Today we look at a proverb that has spiritual wisdom in view. The righteous points to all true believers. The true child of God partakes of Christ, the bread of life; this satisfies the soul because salvation is of Christ alone. Likewise, in the Psalms we read:
"The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing. Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD. What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it." (Psalm 34:10-14).
"Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's." (Psalm 103:5).
The second half of the proverb teaches that the wicked shall want. The wicked in the Bible is a spiritual picture of the unsaved. The wicked often have material goods but what the belly of the wicked shall want is spiritual food; they will want a Saviour on judgement day to pay for their sins, but it will be too late. The belly of the wicked shall want, but out of the belly of the true believer shall the rivers of living water which are the pure gospel flow:
"In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water." (John 7:37,38).
