This proverbs contrasts the nature of a true believer with an unsaved individual. A scorner is a spiritual picture of the unsaved. The unsaved cannot truly comprehend heavenly doctrine beacause those who are not spiritual cannot truly hear, believe or repent. In 1 Corinthians 2, this teaching is further touched upon:
"Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ." (1 Corinthians 2:12-16).
The second part of the proverb identifies with a true believer. Only when the LORD by His grace opens the spiritual eyes of an individual will they be able to understand the nature of how the gospel makes one wise unto salvation by grace. A true child of God will recognize the power of the Holy Spirit working through the word and will continually seek counsel from the Bible in order to prosper spiritually. This is testified to in Psalm 1 where we read:
"Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper." (Psalm 1:1-3).
