Proverbs 14:18

"The simple inherit folly: but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.".

Today we look at a proverb that contrasts the upright and the wicked. Looking at the proverb spiritually, we a fool is a description of an unbeliever in the Proverbs; folly spiritually is a false teaching or false gospel. How do unbelievers inherit folly? Most often it is "inherited" by being passed down by tradition:

"The Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, "Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands?" And He said to them, "Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: `THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. `BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.' "Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men." He was also saying to them, "You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition." (Mark 7:5-9) nas.

The second half of the proverb is a rainbow of hope. The prudent are those who become saved, they have the God given grace which leads to spiritual knowledge and truth; they are not caught up in traditions, they are willing to set aside tradition to worship our LORD in Spirit and truth. Thus they are crowned with knowledge, this of course is not worldly knowledge but spiritual knowledge which is far superior. Praise the LORD for His wonderful gifts!:

"But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen." (2 Peter 3:18).
