Here we have a proverb that alludes to the spreading of the gospel. There can be no more pleasant words here on the earth than the written Word given to us by our LORD! Throughout the Bible honey is used as a spiritual portrait of the gospel. One example is found in Psalm 19, where we read:
"The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward." (Psalm 19:9-11).
The gospel is likened to honey because the Word of God is the way that God saves His people. This is why it is sweet to the soul. The Bible is spiritual honey that the elect partake of every time they read or hear the Word of God. And by the Word we grow in understanding and truth:
"How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way." (Psalm 119:103,104).
