The Pharisees who despised Jesus and were hypocrites had at times refered to Jesus Himself in a deragatory manner as a "samaritan":
"Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God. Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? " - John 8:46-48.
Jesus here would teach in this parable what it is to be a good Samaritan. Since this parable was told by Jesus in about 29 A.D., it has no doubt inspired many unto good works which are a gift from heaven to true saints. The beauty in itself of the parable shows it could only come from inspired God and not the mind of man. Like this parable, Jesus told another great parable about good fruits being manifest in Christians:
"Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty." - Matthew 13:18-23.
The oil and wine the good Samaritan pours on this man left half-dead are spiritual portraits of Christ's people coming with the gospel to anoint the half-dead who are God's elect and have God save them through the hearing of His gospel. The oil represents the Holy Spirit working through the Word in redemption and sanctification to the hearts of the elect. We are anointed Kings and Priests of Christ:
Revelation 1:6 - And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
Revelation 5:10 - And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
Revelation 20:6 - Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
True belivers will not lose their salvation, they will not be fooled by false gospels in end times becasuse once we are saved we are saved eternally, great trouble will come to those who attempt to harm God's anointed; note what we read about eternal salvation and the oil and ine together in revelation:
"And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter. And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch. Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me. But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one. Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?" - John 10:22-32.
"And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine." Revelation 6:4.
This great parable concludes of the good Samaritan with the words: "Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise". Jesus is here is speaking to us today; the entire Bible is; therefore we are to go and do like the example Jesus taught here. Now backing up a bit, back to the beginning of the parable, we see that Jesus taught this in response to the question: "who is my neighbor".
Finally the key may lie in the next to last verse where we read that the Samritan "shewed mercy ". Mercy here is the Greek word "eleos" whic Strong Concordance defines: "mercy: kindness or good will towards the miserable and the afflicted, joined with a desire to help them".
Dearest reader, where lies your mercy and your heart this day?
"Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life." - Jude 1:21.
